Types of tequila on the basis of their age:
But first things first, Why do we call tequila a tequila? Well, its because of the fact that liquors produced in tequila region of mexico are allowed to be branded as tequila. There are strict regulations of the Mexican government, which these drinks must comply to.
Tequila is divided into 2 types on the basis of the degree of purity of the sugar that is used to make tequila. "Tequila 100% Agave" means that it is made from the juices which have been obtained from the blue agave plant. These Tequilas must also be bottled at the distillery. According to the law tequila mist contain at least 51 percent of the juices from the blue agave plant. The remainder can be substituted with other mixtures and sugar juices. Moreover, this kind of Tequila does not have to be bottled in Mexico, but can be transported to different countries to be bottled.
There are 4 types of Tequila Drinks, which depend on its age.
Blanco tequila: This is also called silver tequila which is clear tequila that is bottled straight after distillation. It is very strong as it has true flavor of blue agave plant.
Oro tequila which is also called gold tequila, is made from Blanco Tequila by adding flavorings like caramel and extra colors. As a result it looks more like an aged Tequila drink.
Reposado or Rested tequila is normally matured in barrels for at least 2 months and up to 1 year. The oak barrels cause mellow taste and pale color of the tequila. This type of tequila is largely demanded and that is why the process of such tequila have increased sharply.
Aneno tequila which is also called Aged Tequila has been matured for atleast 1-3 years in oak barrels. It has an amber colour and earthy flavor, which is a result of its aging process.
Extra aneno which is also called extra aged tequilas have been stored for long in oak barrels and hence is rare and more expensive than any other type of tequila.
