Rum is considered as one of the most versatile and, thus, the most popular distilled beverages of the world. But there are various types of rums which are used to make different types of cocktails and mixed drinks. And it is very essential to keep in mind all the types of rum, in order to make perfect cocktail for your perfect occasion. The following are the types of rum, which you should know about, to make perfect mixed drinks:
1. White Rum
White rum is also called silver rum. It is usually clear as it is light boiled. It has very subtle flavor. The subtle taste of white rum makes it favorable for mixing it with drinks and making various cocktails. It is normally aged in oak barrels that give it a smooth taste.
2. Golden Rum
Golden rums are medium boiled rums, that gets its color from again or maturing in oak barrels. Its flavor is more mellow than subtle and is a bit strong than white rum. Its aging also gives it a smooth taste. Because of amber color of this rum because of its aging process, it is also called as amber rum.
3. Dark Rum
These rums, as the name suggest, are very dark in color because they are hard boiled. They are prepared from pot stills and mainly have a dark golden color. They are matured for a lot of years in oak barrels. They are commonly consumed straight up and are very rich in taste and flavor because of its again process and as it is hard boiled.
4. Spiced Rum
A lot of spices and flavors are added to white, golden and dark rum to give to some more flavor. These rums are used in making a lot of cocktails and mixed drinks, frozen drinks, rum punches. These types of rums are very popular among youth and the people of Caribbean.
5. Añejo or Aged Rum
Anejo rum or Aged rum, like the name suggest, is aged for a at least 7-8 years before actually selling them in the market. Anejo is a Spanish word for “aged”. Because of its long aging process, it gets a lot of flavor and color. And sometimes different rums are mixed together in order to maintain its consistency.
